Approximately 40% of patients who visit the emergency department undergo medical imaging, with conventional radiography the most frequently prescribed examination (71% of cases). Because of the large number of patients and the small number of radiologists in hospital, on average 82% of emergency X-rays are now interpreted off-line by radiologists, rather than directly during the emergency examination.
